Our '01 Galaxy girls battled to a 2nd place finish in the U16 Girls Division at the Sounders FC Cup held at the Starfire Academy in Seattle on July 22-24, 2016. Our 01G girls went 2-0-1 in pool play highlighted by 6 goals for and none against. (5-0 v. Blackhills FC - Washington; 0-0 v. FC Portland Navy; 1-0 v. Federal Way FC - Washington).
At the end of pool play, our 01G team was tied on points with FC Portland Navy in every category, thus forcing a penalty kick shootout to determine a berth in the U16G finals against FC Portland's White team. In the penalty kick shootout, HGFC Goalkeeper Madison Corso brilliantly saved one of FC Portland's penalty kicks, while our 01G girls converted all 5 of theirs, to prevail 5-4 (1-0).
In the final match, and without the services of starting forward, Kahiau Among who suffered a bad ankle sprain in an earlier match, our 01G ladies conceded an early goal to put FC Portland up 1-0 at about the 10th minute mark. But, true to form, our ladies battled back with Kaitlyn Shimomoto earning and converting a penalty kick in the 20th minute to pull the game even at halftime. Despite enjoying a significant advantage in possession and many scoring opportunities, FC Portland was able to convert one last goal and was able to hang on for the 2-1 victory.
We are extremely proud of how well our girls played and represented themselves, our Club, our families and our State. With half of our team playing up an age group, we couldn't be prouder of how well our girls acquitted themselves, earning praise from many opposing teams and coaches for their style of play and technical ability. We are also very grateful for the tremendous family support on our trip and for the invaluable contributions made by our guest players.
Please join me in congratulating our players and coaches:
